I am a Personal Stylist.
My purpose is to bring out the best in others.
I advise individuals on how to dress to suit their personal style that reflects their true inner self. I help them feel confident in their own skin so they can look at their own body shape and think ‘This is me and I love what I see’. I teach them how to wear colours that accentuate their natural features as well as advise them on hair and makeup to suit. As a result it gives the individual a polished look from head to toe and allows them to unleash the stylish person that they are.

To button or not to button? How to go from simple to stylish in a few seconds

Understanding the functions and features of clothing can instantly make you look stylish; you are basically dissecting an outfit.

We all know the purposes of clothing but I’m going to hone in on the adornment factor and teach you how simple adjustments will help you turn a functioning piece of clothing into a feature that will create on-the-spot stylish looks for you!

THE UNBUTTONED SHIRT

(Who can forget our crowd favourite of Dancing Stylist’s Suit and Tie video where I’m wearing a white shirt unbuttoned)

There are a lot of rules about the unbuttoned shirt. A few examples I’ve heard include:

‘If you’re not sure play it safe and only unbutton 1’

‘To remain classy, don’t go lower than 2 buttons’

‘Anything lower than 3 unbuttoned needs to be worn without a bra’

‘Only wear 3-4 unbuttoned when you have a camisole/singlet underneath’

I generally leave 2-3 buttons undone depending on where I’m going. However, during summer, the long sleeve shirt looks cool buttoned up and teamed with some short shorts or mini skirt. (create a balance) And in winter you can wear this same shirt unbuttoned with a long deep v-neck sweater and some fitted jeans.

Being a creative dresser I love wearing 3 unbuttoned with a super chunky necklace worn underneath my shirt. (so you can only see it through the opened shirt gap) I’d team this up with a long full length tight fitted skirt and some sneakers.

For someone who has a more feminine style I would recommend a soft and flowy pastel coloured long sleeve shirt with 2 buttons undone, some medium -long length pearls with matching bracelet paired with some high waisted dress pants and some open- toed platforms.

THE BUTTONED SHIRT

The ‘buttoned up to the neck’ look was traditionally known as corporate wear but nowadays is seen as edgy.  I’m always thinking ‘What are you hiding under there?’ when someone buttons all the way up. There’s something mysterious about intentional covering up that is sexy. Wouldn’t you agree?

Some like to wear it as is and others like to add a bow tie, scarf or necklace for extra style. The latter is a perfect example of how to wear the buttoned up shirt in a corporate environment and still look chic. Just keeping in mind that the colours need to be neutrals with a single colour or a simple print and the same goes for necklace. It needs to be thin – medium in both thickness and height -nothing too bulky or extreme.

There is no right nor wrong answer. You can wear it one way on one day and another way the other dependant on where you’re going and what you’re doing and how you are feeling.  Style is all about experimenting, confidence and attitude and you will discover what works for you as you try different combinations.

Regardless of your Personal Style, you need to understand that the shirt buttoned or un-buttoned can still look fashionable.

And you need to remember that little things matter, oh yes they do.
